Learning Through Labs

Labs are not just for science class...we can also do them in social studies!  Currently, the seventh graders are exploring the early British colonies in North America.  One of the most interesting and mysterious settlements was at Roanoke, North Carolina.  This first British settlement mysteriously disappeared and historians today still do not have a definitive answer as to what happened to these colonists.  That's where our student come in!

Acting as History Special Investigators, students worked in pairs to visit several stations around the room investigating images, record books, videos, first account interviews, time period maps, and more to come to their own conclusions as to what really happened to the Roanoke settlers.  Students completed an investigation journal and formed a conclusion using three sources of evidence from stations visited.
